Manchester Ward 5 Selectman Candidate Michael Alexander Garcia

Free State Project members sign a pledge to move to New Hampshire and work to change the way of life in our state. They do not move here for a job, or for family, or even because they like what New Hampshire has to offer. Instead, they move here because a political group they are affiliated with voted on a state to move to in order to enact a political agenda, and New Hampshire was the unlucky recipient of that vote.

Manchester Ward 5 Selectman Candidate Michael Alexander Garcia

Manchester Ward 5 Selectman Candidate Michael Alexander Garcia moved to New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project. Garcia has demonstrated considerable ties to the Free State Project, including:

Garcia’s membership in the Free State Project was touted by Free State Project founder Jason Sorens, as well as by posts on the Free State Project message board.

Garcia is a former elected State Representative from Nashua whose Free State Project affiliation was previously not well-known. Garcia served as a State Representative from Nashua from 2012 to 2014. He lost his re-election there in 2014 and voters rejected him as a State Representative candidate from Manchester in 2016 as well. During the 2014 and 2016 elections, his Free State Project affiliation was widely criticized by concerned community members.

In his own words: Garcia chooses his party affiliation based on what will most likely get him elected in a district. In June 2013, Garcia spoke on a Free State Project convention panel and told the audience he ran as a Democrat because running as a third party candidate isn’t feasible. The panel discussed deciding which party to run under based on the majority party in any given district. After his State Rep win in Nashua, another Free Stater commented that FSP candidates should take a lesson from Garcia and run under whatever party banner will get them elected.

Garcia is a supporter of NH Exit, an organization started by and run by Free Staters that is advocating for New Hampshire to secede from the rest of the country. Garcia spoke with apparent disappointment that people in the State House were not receptive to the idea of secession. (PorcFest 2013, NH State Politics Panel)

Why is Michael Garcia’s FSP Affiliation Important?

The ultra-extreme Free State Project voted on a state to move 20,000 people to, with the stated purpose to take over state government and dismantle it. The Free State Project seeks to create a libertarian “utopia” void of public infrastructure and common laws, and to use the power of numbers to dramatically change New Hampshire – even threatening secession from the rest of the country.[1] Members like Michael Garcia are actively working to help the Free State Project fulfill those goals.

[1] “Once we’ve taken over the state government, we can slash state and local budgets, which make up a sizeable proportion of the tax and regulatory burden we face every day. Furthermore, we can eliminate substantial federal interference by refusing to take highway funds and the strings attached to them. Once we’ve accomplished these things, we can bargain with the national government over reducing the role of the national government in our state. We can use the threat of secession as leverage to do this.” [Announcement:
The Free State Project by Founder Jason Sorens]
